Application Guide, continued

The following table is a guideline for applying limestone to achieve a target pH of 6.5.

Pounds per 1000 square feet
Kilograms per 100 square metres
Starting Soil pH Sandy Soil Loamy -Average Clay Soil
Starting Soil pH Sandy Soil Loamy -Average Clay Soil
4.5 125 350 575
4.5 61 171 281
4.6-4.7 100 325 550
4.6-4.7 49 159 269
4.8-4.9 100 315 525
4.8-4.9 49 154 256
5.0-5.1 75 290 475
5.0-5.1 37 142 232
5.2-5.3 50 225 375
5.2-5.3 24 110 183
5.4-5.5 25 140 225
5.4-5.5 12 68 110
5.6-5.7 25 90 150
5.6-5.7 12 44 73
5.8-5.9 25 65 100
5.8-5.9 12 32 49
6.0-6.1 25 50 75
6.0-6.1 12 24 37
6.2-6.3 25 40 50
6.2-6.3 12 20 24

For example, if you have a yard that is 40ft x 25ft, and your starting pH was 5.4 or better, and your soil is sandy, you would want to apply 25lbs to achieve a pH of 6.5.

Notes:

  • Optimum pH level is not the same for all plants. A list of common crops and their recommended pH range is available here.

  • Mosher's Limestone will not burn, and can be spread at any time. Two applications per year, in the spring and fall, are recommended.

  • Drop style spreaders are more suitable than broadcast spreaders because they spread more evenly.

  • When applying, it is best to make two applications with the second perpendicular to the first. This ensures an even coat with no missed areas on your lawn.

  • Mosher's Easy Spread Pelletized limestone is less dusty and releases more quickly into the soil because it is ground finer than regular limestone.
